LASIK Facts

A Gallup poll recently revealed that many people are misinformed about LASIK facts. Although over three million successful LASIK surgeries have been performed in the last ten years, the poll suggested that many people believe there are negative or severe side effects to the procedure that simply don't exist.

Out of one thousand men and women surveyed - all of whom wore glasses or contacts on a daily basis- eighty six percent indicated they were not planning on having LASIK surgery because they were "waiting for a safer procedure." However, half of the individuals who gave this survey response also indicated that they had not bothered to research legitimate LASIK facts regarding the procedure's safety and success ratings by reading consumer reports or talking with a qualified LASIK surgeon. In fact, over three-fourths of those who believed LASIK was dangerous admitted that they knew "very little" about the LASIK procedure.

Some of the most common misconceptions surrounding LASIK facts that the survey uncovered were a perception that the procedure caused night vision problems and haloes. While these side effects were reported in the early days of the procedure, LASIK facts and statistics now tell us that these negative side effects are very rare unless you already suffer from a degenerative eye disease. In these cases, a qualified LASIK surgeon would not approve your surgery in the first place unless he or she discussed these complication risks with you first.

For those of you who may still be worried LASIK is a dangerous procedure, here are a few LASIK facts that should ease your mind. The risk of LASIK-induced blindness is the same as the risk of going blind as a result of wearing glasses or contacts -virtually zero. This is because LASIK surgery is planned and executed with the aid of very advanced computerized eye mapping combined with the precision of laser technology - both of which have been evolving rapidly since the advent of LASIK in the late 1990s.

So, if you suffer from nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism, the true LASIK facts you should consider include the following: LASIK can efficiently improve your vision ailment during an in-office procedure that requires no overnight stay; it only takes a few days to fully recover from the procedure; if you research your LASIK surgeon carefully, the chances of complications are extremely rare.

Don't let false LASIK facts keep you from enjoying life without the hassle of glasses or contacts. Call your Icon LASIK surgeon today to find out if you are a good candidate for the procedure. During your initial consultation the surgeon can explain the LASIK surgery process to you in detail and separate the true LASIK facts from the common misconceptions.
